The World of Knotty Weave

It came about in the timeless void, that four inquisitive but bodiless entities found a pocket of intriguing vibrations. Investigating more closely, they perceived symbols, archetypes, languages, numbers, forms and colors…all rich with diverse meanings utterly alien to them but nevertheless very charming. Eventually, they pieced together that these dense and varied fragments were the children of things called humans. The entities knew humans only from what their minds were spawning. These beautiful and enticing bits and bobs were human thoughts pouring into the void from somewhere beyond – where the human things doubtless lived, unreachable by the entities that admired this raw material.

Like any crafter would, once they found inspiration, they set to work. They took to themselves forms that fit their task, and began to make themselves into the Weavers. They each made themselves enormous, spindly limbs to knit and sew with and many eyes with which to view their progress. They began to reckon time by how their new project grew. From human thought, they spun a world that peopled itself with tiny living things.

At first, the infant Weavers loved order, weaving their new world in tight uniformity. They balanced everything, landscapes, creatures, and ideas, in delicate and ordered chords. It was all very pretty and soothing to look at. Soon, though, they found that strict order was not entirely stable. The little living things that sprang from the infant Weave or landed in its strands would gnaw at it, or a section would be pulled here or there as they worked, and the whole thing would start to unravel.

So the Weavers began to introduce knots and whorls into their work. The little living things could chew to their hearts’ content, the growing world could shift and twist without breaking, and the Weave became Knotty Weave. This was infinitely more satisfying for the Weavers, as it gave the whole project a carefree look, not too fussy, you know. It’s not like they have anything to prove, anyway.

The Weavers now sit, four giant spidery creatures, in the Vortex, the roiling center from which they create Knotty Weave. Their minds completely upon their task, they no longer trouble themselves with the little gnawing things that live within their creation. Eventually, perhaps when humans are no more and they have run out of this seemingly endless font of creative thought, they will cast off and finish Knotty Weave. Maybe they will move on to some other project and then Knotty Weave will adorn an extra-cosmic shelf in a psychic museum. Or maybe it will just gather the glittering dust of eons in an infinite charity craft sale.

But for now…Knotty Weave spins about the Vortex, growing ever larger and stranger as the Weavers allow themselves to be carried further and further along the current of human thought…
